Can AI-generated art or music be copyrighted?
This is general information, not legal advice, and the answer differs by country. But the shape of it is now clear enough to act on.
The shape of the answer
Output the machine produced on its own is, in most places, nobody's copyright. The US Copyright Office has said so repeatedly, most fully in its 2025 report on copyrightability: material generated entirely by AI is not registrable, and typing a prompt — however long — does not by itself make you the author of what comes out. Courts in the US have agreed on the narrow point that a non-human cannot be an author.
What you contributed is protectable in the ordinary way. Lyrics you wrote, a script, a selection and arrangement of many generated pieces into one work, substantial edits, your own voice or performance, a painted-over render — these are human authorship and are treated as such. In the US you register the work and disclaim the AI-generated portions; other jurisdictions reach similar places by different routes (the UK has a specific computer-generated-works provision that is under review; the EU and Japan look at the human contribution case by case).
Platform terms sit on top. Whether you may use the output commercially, whether the platform keeps a licence to it, whether free-tier output is treated differently — all of that is in the terms of the tool you used, for the plan you were on, on the day you used it. Read the current version; they change.
Why this makes the record you make today matter
Notice what every one of those answers turns on: what did the human do, and when. That is a question of evidence, and evidence is easiest to make at the time and nearly impossible to make later. Six months on, nobody — including you — can reconstruct which forty generations you threw away or which verse you rewrote by hand.
So the practical advice is the same in every jurisdiction: document your contribution the day you finish, and fix the date. That is what the human contribution field in an authorship record is for. It is frozen into the record with the file's fingerprint and your name, anchored to a public chain that night, and verifiable by anyone later. It does not decide whether you hold copyright; it is what you would need to show whoever does decide.
What to write in the contribution field
Specific, modest, true. “Wrote all lyrics. Generated ~40 candidates in Suno, chose one, re-ordered the bridge and the final chorus. Re-recorded the lead vocal myself. Mastered in Logic.” Avoid adjectives; list acts. If the honest entry is “prompted and picked one”, write that — a record that overstates is worse than no record, because it is the first thing the other side will test.

Questions
If I wrote a very detailed prompt, am I the author of the image?
In the US Copyright Office's stated view, no — a prompt alone does not make you the author of the output, however detailed. Your authorship lies in what you did with the output: selection, arrangement, modification. Other jurisdictions vary.
Does a blockchain record replace copyright registration?
No. Where a government registration exists, it has legal effects a private record cannot have. A blockchain-anchored record is evidence of existence and of your stated contribution on a date; use it alongside registration, not instead.
What if the law changes?
Then the question will still be what you did and when. A dated, verifiable statement of your contribution is useful under any rule that turns on human authorship — which is every rule so far.
